A siege within a siege

The Rust Government’s September 2024 plan to found a village on the Rustopia US Large server was interrupted just after they had finished building their central community base – a team of bandits had set up camp outside the base, and stayed watching the door for several hours, shooting at anyone that passed by.

Bandits loitering on a roof to the left, watching the community base on the right.

The Gov had an ambition to construct a village wall to keep out the surrounding banditry, but now this siege of the community base had taken the attention of the 20 or so villagers, who themselves had now put the team of around 10 bandits in the middle of the village under siege.

In one moment during the conflict, some of the bandits got inside the community base, so Government members battled their way to the walls of the base and managed to trap half of the bandits inside, adding another internal layer to this concentric ring of siege lines. As if the situation wasn’t farcical enough, a valiant Government member would now be trapped in the toolcupboard room of the invaded community base.

Control of the area on 5th September.

It was almost like the structure of the conflict was analogous to the animations of life outside the game, where energy clashes on every scale. From the macro to the micro – it’s sieges all the way down…
