Rust was originally a web browser game before being released on the Steam Early Access program on 11th December 2013 for $19.99. The game left Early Access on 8th February 2018.
Garry wrote a review of Rust.
The game used to feature zombies, and red “mutated” bears and wolves, which dropped loot when killed.

An item cut from the game but later reintroduced was the shack.

Another reintroduced feature was the wood pile.

On 1st October 2014, Steam’s default launch option for Rust changed from the Unity 4.5 version (referred to as Rust Legacy), to the Unity 5 version (Rust Experimental).
Rust has sold over 20 million copies on Steam.
The official island maps Hapis and Savas mean prison and battle respectively in Turkish.
There was an art competition to win Rust Alpha keys in July 2013. One of the contributions was this drawing by MAYBEONE:

Rust was the first game to use Steam’s item store feature (April 2015).

Servers are forced to wipe on the first Thursday of every month.
In 2013, Garry mentioned the concept of a giant that would attack player’s bases. The role was later filled by the Patrol Helicopter.

The Pookie Bear item is said to be based on the Easy Anticheat mascot.
