The War of the Holy Trees

The Last AK event began on 20th February 2025. In keeping with the medieval roleplay theme, atleast five churches were built, and two of them each housed a sacred tree, which players would visit and make offerings to.

A group named Shephard’s Villa Empire had a tradition of performing sacrifices at a sacred tree since atleast Jan 2017, and had quickly built a large stone church built around a tree on the first day of the event, which was run by an oracle and a priest.

If you rode a horse from the Empire’s church for a couple of minutes to the west, you would reach Reksmore’s Kingdom, where you would find a large cathedral, which was run by Father Neon and his fellow Elves that wore cloaks. A feature of this building was a throne room that housed a small holy tree, which the group worshipped by chanting. The entrance to the throne room was guarded by a flame turret.

Both of these factions had many soldiers. The Kingdom judged that the Empire “worshipped a false tree“, and there was a sense of hostility between them. The Empire reinforced their church with barricades, before their party returned to the church at one point and found that their tree was gone.

What happened exactly to the Empire’s tree was not documented, but the relations between them and the Kingdom had clearly turned hostile towards the end of the event. Attempts at negotiations between the two factions repeatedly broke down, only leading to violence. The Empire’s oracle declared that they must “avenge the Sacred Tree” as they went to war against the Kingdom – they used several boats to sail west, landing at the Kingdom to launch a siege assault against the King’s fortress.

The Empire then used a dozen siege weapons during an assault against a castle belonging to a group that worshipped the Dome monument. Though the Dome worshippers were located near the Empire, they had aligned with the Kingdom halfway through the event, and were reinforced by the Elves.

The defenders managed to repel the Empire’s attacks in both battles, and the event appeared to end before additional clashes could occur. From a perspective of military conquest, the war was inconclusive.

The theme of the event had been about acquiring the last AK, which was noted as having been obtained by the Empire, but the drama had largely revolved around this player-driven religious conflict. Perhaps unknowingly, the hundreds of players involved had repeated ancient aspects of warfare between Celtic tribes, with a book on the subject describing that “the cutting down of an enemies sacred tree was considered as an act of war and symbolic conquest.
