For over a decade now, there have been screenshots of what I’d refer to as “base art” posted in places like the Steam community hub, such as this robot shared by Loren from June 2014:
Such instances of culture seem to be appreciated, as this one shared by kacieanne in February 2014 became a landmark, as evidenced by a comment that read “let’s meet at the YOLO tower”:
Much of the base art in the later (Experimental) version of Rust included Game Boy-era depictions of Mario, such as this screenshot shared by Nymbles from January 2017:
There’s also been some interesting screenshots of what I would call “foundation art”, including intricate patterns, like this example shared by King Ding-A-Ling in February 2017:
And reminiscent of early human art painted in caves, we clearly have a scene of two people fighting, shared by MOVESY, circa November 2024:
